Unit 10 production essay

Horror
The genre I have chosen is horror, I am going to analyze ‘IT’ and ‘The Purge’. I have chosen these films because they are good examples and carry on the same type of things.

The film ‘IT’ is the story of a boy called Georgie who is out in the rain and meets the clown in the sewer
Who in which is a danger to society as we known because this is a remake that the clown eats children Throughout the film we see the clown terrorizing numerous children in their comfort zones, creating a ripple effect into their lives and which sends the terrorized children onto a mission to defeat the clown ‘IT’. Pennywise relates to the typical steriotypical imaginations of what any person would think a monster would look like, his costume and makeup would initially show the audience that the film is going to be scary. The use of dramatic music in the film initially gives the audience visceral pleasures and the build up that something is going to happen also the lighting in the film is set to the era the film is set in which is the 1980's and its very low key lighting to highlight the charactors moods and feelings about living in Derry.

There is a sense of Todorov’s theory in the film as one of the main character's brothers were killed in the film and he then tries to thinks of a way to find his brother because he feels guilty that it was his fault that ‘Georgie’ his brother died that night. The visual storytelling carry’s on the real-life story that children are scared of clowns. The audience of this fil is around and 18 because young children would usually be scared of this film and would probably get nightmares. the cinematography in the film is produced in a way to scare the audience, for example at the start of the film it is clear that a drone is flying through the sewer with music of the genre playing which automatically makes the reader think something is going to jump out but it doesn't which makes the reader calm for when something else will happen. the mise en scene at the start of the film is in a forest which could make the audience think the missing children will never be found. Todorov's theory is used within the film, for example when Georgie went missing his brother Bill has then gave himself the task of finding an explanation to Georgie's disappearance aka finding a new equilibrium. This part of the film the person in peril is Georgie who has a main part in the story but is only seen for around 10 minutes of the film, the Hero is Bill (Georgies brother) he trys to find a suitable explination to his little bothers dissapearence an dpossible find him but doesnt succeed.

The Purge
The film ‘The Purge’ goes through a version of a dystopian America in which crime is legal once a year. The Purge series has received a generally mixed critical reception and has grossed over $447 million in the worldwide box office against a combined budget of $35 million. An affluent Los Angeles neighborhood is home to the Sandin family. On Purge night 2022, the family becomes a target of a masked gang of young criminals due to their actions in helping a wounded stranger being targeted by Purgers to take shelter in their home. The sadistic gang leader unmasks himself to threaten the family via the cameras that they would be murdered if they don't surrender the man within an hour. The stranger later helps the Sandins when the purging gang and the hateful neighbors invade the household and attempt to kill them. The film's popularity is shown through its ‘purge announcement’ being used in scare rooms and scary mazes. the cinematography in this film is very much of a dystopian society. The mise en scene in the background is very nice modern pieces of aret and furniture which would give the impression that this is a house of a wealthy family. The typical part of the horror genre is that something bad is going to happen this is why its typically dark and violent. The darkness signifys this as the fact people cant see through dsrkness and dont jnow what is going to happen, the violence signifys that

the film focuses on what a negative effect the purge has on america, this entices the audience to watch and see how the sandin family deal with that. in a flashback in the film we see that life wasnt all good for the sandin family which would be relatable to most of the audience. there is a sense of propps therory in the film with the homeless man and and the group of people trying to kill him initially the group would be the false hero and the homeless man would be the princess. In a horror film there is typically not a group of baddies there is more of just one person which would initially make the audience think that the film isnt some idea just re made and would make them want to watch. The hero in the film isnt soeone we are introduced as a person who would be a her so this would give the audience something to talk about.

the similarities between The Purge and IT would be that they both enflict terror on ther audience and also people are trying to get them. The diffrences between them are that in the purge it is something the government cae up with but in IT it is a clown. Also they both use diffrent codes and convention in the fact that in IT everything is dead ie the colours and the place it is set in everyone is miserable but in the purge the community is a nice safe and happly place to live in.

Fantasy
For this genre, I am choosing Charlie and the chocolate factory and hocus pocus as they both are good examples of fantasy.

Charlie and the chocolate factory:
The film tells the story of Charlie Bucket as he receives a Golden Ticket and visits Willy Wonka's chocolate factory with four other children from around the world. In a small town, Charlie Bucket, a poor paperboy, watches a group of children visit a candy shop. Walking home, he passes Willy Wonkaschocolate factory.  Charlie rushes home to his mother and bedridden grandparents. After telling Grandpa Joe about the tinker, Joe reveals that Wonka locked the factory because other candy makers, including rival Arthur Slugworth, sent in spies to steal his recipes. Wonka disappeared, but after three years resumed selling candy. Willy Wonka announces who wins the tickets on tv. The five people who won the tickets are Augustus Gloop, Verruca Salt, Mike Tv, Violet Beauregard and obviously Charlie Bucket. In the film we see something happen to each children except Charlie Bucket, but this was part of Mr Wonkas plan to entice the children in each part of the factory and the last one to be standing would get to live in the factory with Mr Wonka and when he passes away inherit the factory for himself. In the end Charlie denies the factory because this family weren’t allowed to live there with him. in the film the mise en scene shows a magical fanasy land where all childrens drems would come true. the reason for this is that when willy wonka was a child he didnt have a good childhood and couldnt eat candy because his father was a dentist and as a result of this willy wanted to create a dreamland of childrens dreams, as a result of this the films target audience would be drawn in to the film and want to live the characters life, But to make the film to be a success the character would be all from driffrent backgrounds and countries. the genre convention of the film is the similarities between the character like them all wanting to live this dream and experience the wonka chocolate factory. the colours in the film are the more brighter colours of the rainbow which would make the audience enjoy the film more. To me it is visable from the start that charlie will win the chocolate factory because its in hime home town whereas the other four children had to come from difrent cities or countries to get the experience.

Hocus Pocus:
The film of hocus pocus is a story of three witches who suck the lives out of children in order to make them more powerful and beautiful. The films main character Winnie (Bette Midler) is the more dominant over Mary (Kathy Najimi) and Sarah (Sarah Parkinson) as she seems to have the more knowledge and have more common sense, Mary (Katy najimi) is the one with more of an animal instinct which incorporates a child like way for more of the child audience. Sarah (Sarah Parkinson) is the one to be more beautiful in a stupid way. Sarah is the one who sings to hypnotise the children for winnie to suck the lives out of them. There is numerous songs throughout the film but they are linked into the story and don’t just break out into song which doesn’t make it into a musical. The first part of the story is in a more olden Shakespeare time and then 300 years later tells the story of Max Dennison (Omri Katz) and his sister Dani Dennison (Thora Birch) and their friend Allison (Venessa Shaw) on a mission to send the witches back to where they came from and save the children of Salem. The genre of fantasy is show through these films because they both represent childhood dreams of the giant chocolate factory and the story of the three witches. the film also features more examples of childrens fanatsy as thetres always been theory of witches and children like to dress up as witches for halloween and fancy dress parties. the mise en scene in the fil is very dark colours which sets the mood of the film. the characters arent really linked together they are all diffrent. the camera work in the film is modern and the way the made the wiches fly is not to the ear the film s set in. Charlie an dthe chocolate factory and hocus pocus have some similatiries and diffrences like they both are childrens myths and something children enjoy. the diffrences are that hocus pocus is where the theory that witches eat your soal and have a very 1600's story to it but in charlie and the chocolate factory a man haveing a competion for children to see inside his choclate factory isnt so old.
